What to wear

FEET
• Trial runners are best (better grip in muddy conditions)
• Astro boots also work well
• We strongly advise you do not wear normal runners or any other footwear, as the reduced grip will increase your risk of injury
• Studs, cleats, blades & spikes are NOT PERMITTED

HANDS
• Fingerless cycling gloves are best as full finger gloves may get water logged

UPPER BODY
• Base Layer – compression top
• Top Layer – Technical t-shirt (optional)
• Wear long sleeves to help protect your arms at crawl obstacles
• Avoid cotton materials!!

LEGS
• Compression leggings are recommended to help protect legs when crawling.
• Avoid flimsy material that may rip or tear.

REMEMBER
• Duct Tape, Electrical Tape & Cable Ties are not allowed on your shoes as they come off too easily and thus become a danger to the livestock on the farm.
• Make sure you TRIPLE KNOT your laces instead.

Minimum Age

Children aged 10 on 5th September 2026 will be able to participate in H&B Family 7KM when accompanied by an parent or guardian.

As you will be doing the full 7KM Adult course, there may be some obstacles that don’t suit your child. If that’s the case, simply walk your child around the obstacle to the next one. You’ll always have the option to bypass any obstacle you’re uncomfortable with.

Swimming Requirements

The H&B Family 7KM course includes various water obstacles in Splash Zone in the heart of Killruddery, featuring challenges like Pontoon Mania, Water Jump and Splashdown Slide.

From a water safety perspective, everyone is fitted with a buoyancy aid when they get in the vicinity of the Lake, while our team of lifeguards patrol both from in the water on kayaks and from the shore.

If you or your child is a non-swimmer or doesn't like water, you obviously can skip this section and take an alternative route.

Spectator Tip: Splash Zone is a 10-15 minute walk from the Event Village so spectators can follow the signs but may need to hurry back to catch the Finish Line action!

Start Times

Hell & Back doesn’t have one mass start. Instead, participants join in waves of 300-400 people throughout the day. You can choose your preferred wave start time when registering and check it on the Start Time Checker.

For the H&B Family 8KM, there are only two waves at 12:25 and 12:40. Please select one during registration.

Car Parking

Weather permitting, parking will be available on-site at Killruddery or in the nearby IDA Business Park on Southern Cross Road. Pre-paid parking can be reserved during registration at €9 per car (bring QR code), with on-the-day parking available at €10 cash per car.

Insurance

Personal Accident Cover is included in the registration fee of all participants. This cover may include benefits in the event of you incurring an injury.

Can I Change My Start Time?
As there are only two H&B Family start times (12:25 and 12:40), start times cannot unfortunately be changed after you register.

Can't Take Part?
If you cannot participate, email registrations@aliveoutside.ie to transfer to another H&B Family event. Transfers are unavailable within two weeks of the event and refunds are not offered.

Wristband Collection
You must register and collect your Wristband AT LEAST 30 minutes before your allocated Wave Start Time.

Risk of Infectious Diseases
As Killruddery is a working farm, please be fully aware of Infectious Diseases. If you experience any symptoms after the event, contact your GP immediately. For more information, click here.

Enjoy a variety of food and drink options in the Event Village to fuel up before or recharge after your H&B run..

Course Closing Times

The 7KM Family course closes at 15:30, giving participants at least 2 hours 50 minutes to complete the course. Once you've finished, you're welcome to stay onsite and enjoy the atmosphere. The Hell & Back Junior event for children aged 8-12 takes place shortly afterwards, so there will still be plenty happening around the venue. The event site closes at 18:30. Please ensure you have collected all personal belongings before departing.
